How About Some Spring Time Slime?

Okay, Come On; Lets Make Spring Time SLIME!

That's right, SLIME!  Too advanced for elementary students?  Not if you have a future scientist sitting on your carpet.  I once had a four year old tell me he wanted to be a paleontologist and he pronounced and spelled it correctly.

If you allow them to be exposed to a higher level of thinking there are some elementary students that will really surprise you with what they remember about chemical reactions and polymers.  No, I am not a scientist, I am a first grade teacher and enhancer of all future professions.  Think of it as a "Triple Play" because it is science, reading, and math altogether.  Oh Yeah, you can even squeeze writing in here for written observations of what happens and what sequences were things mixed in.  Okay, now that we are past all the protesting that slime is not science, let's get SLIMED!

Here are the ingredients you will want to use to make slime with your students:

1 teaspoon of borax

 Clear School Glue or

White School Glue or

Elmer's Glitter Glue

1 teaspoon of Borax
1/2 cup of Elmer's Glue
1/2 cup of water
Food Coloring (optional)
Mixing Spoon
Mixing Bowls

Mix 1 teaspoon of borax into 1 cup of water.  Stir it until the borax dissolves.  In a separate container, mix 1/2 cup of glue (or one bottle) into 1/2 cup of water.  You can add food coloring if you like.  I always add green unless I am using the Glitter Glue.  When you mix the two solutions together it creates slime and hours of FUN!

If you use CLEAR Elmer's School glue you will get transparent slime.  If you use WHITE Elmer's School Glue you will get opaque slime.  If you use Elmer's Classic Glitter Glue you will get Glitter Slime.

How Does This Become Science for Older Kids?

Do different kinds of glue make the slime better?

How does changing the amount of the ingredients change how the slime comes out?

What happens if you store the slime in a container or outside of a container?

What are some polymers that are common things around you?

The wonderful thing about this product is it is "editable" for the teacher.  All you have to do is copy one of the 100+ jpeg images from the file onto the homework sheet with the four squares and insert them into the file.  You can copy and paste the assignments into the homework sheet and then just print out the sheet for the students to take home.  It contains thirty four lessons with so many versatile activities it could be used for anything from spelling on up to word families and word work for your Daily 5.  Please check it out on TpT and download the preview so you can see what a great product and wonderful addition it would be for your classroom to make your life easier.

Just click on one of the six activities, copy and paste it into one of the four squares.  Repeat that until the squares are filled in and you have four brand new activities to send home or use in your classroom all year.

Thank you for stopping by and have FUN shopping for the "Back to School" sale on TpT!

"CURRENTLY" with Farley!

It is August and that means it is time to hook up with Farley's "Currently" which I absolutely love!

I am listening to the sound of the dishwasher and loving it because I didn't have to load that rascal!  I just got home from working in my classroom and I am so tired I can't move a muscle!

I am loving decorating my room this year with the adorable Bojo Birds and Dots on Turquoise from Creative Teaching Press.  Such a fun theme to use for your classroom and I would load pics but I haven't finished yet.

I am like every other teacher and thinking and wondering if I will get my classroom all finished before Open House next Tuesday! AHHHHHHH!!!

I worked so hard in my room (that has concrete floors) that my feet, knees and back are screaming at me!  I am wanting to have a foot massage so I can fall asleep.

I am needing to take a nap as soon as I finish this post and visit some fellow "currently" people on Farley's blog!

Hope everyone is having a great week at school or getting their room ready for those little kiddos to come bursting in with excitement for their first day of school. (a little exaggerated maybe?)

Have a great weekend everyone and summer is over!  Boooo, Hisssssss....
