Today is Blog Swap and Hop Day!  I know you are all going to love hopping around and visiting all the wonderful guest posts.  I am over at Rebecca's blog at Teaching First so feel free to drop by.

Today I have a very special guest, Mary from Sharing Kindergarten so enjoy your blog hopping and all the links are at the bottom for you to hop through.  So grab that cup of coffee and let's go.

Hi Fab First Folks!

I have a little secret. I have always dreamed of teaching first grade! I loved student teaching in first and my mentor teacher taught first. When I got a job, I was offered several K positions, so I took the best one. I have since fallen in LOVE with K. I teach this grade a LOT like 1st. In fact, whenever I make my activities I always *think* back to my experiences in first and make sure they would work for that too.

One of my biggest challenges in teaching is having enough books for my students to read. Especially with The Daily 5 framework, my kids needs lots of books. Let's face it... we are the ones who buy the materials. I have been making easy readers for my students to use. I love connecting reading and writing, so I made a little reader for you guys, FREE of course.

I hope you decide to follow my blog and leave a sweet comment behind.

Best Wishes on a Blessed Day!

Tie Dye Reading Bin Labels

Have you decided on your classroom theme for this coming school year?  I wanted to do polka dots up until 2 or 3 days ago and I changed to the 70s and tie dye and I love that I changed it.  Michelle over at the 3AM teacher is awesome in case you didn't already know it.  She created this beautiful tie dye and it inspired me to change my theme.  I can't wait to see it all come together after a few weeks of working in my classroom in August.  Oh, this is a free product, so click on the picture above and download it for your classroom.  Thanks to all my followers for dropping by and comments are always welcome!

Let's Get to the Point!

The Best Pencil Sharpener
(click image above to go to the website)

I am a new blogger as it goes in blogger land and I saw this pencil sharpener around the internet. I just glanced at it a couple of times and one day a blog post caught my eye. The post was about "The Quietest Classroom Pencil Sharpener" and I stopped and read about it.

I have bought every electric pencil sharpener there is and would not allow the kids to use it because I already knew the life span. (funerals were held once or twice a year) So I applied to review this gorgeous green beauty and received one in the mail this week. It came in a nice reusable box for packing up at the end of the school year.

It came in a neat little plastic wrapper and it contained the hardware necessary to attach it ANYWHERE in the room without having to worry about "where is that outlet anyway"?

I attached it easily and without any problems at all and here it is attached to my computer desk since school is out for the summer.

It can be used with the clamp either from the front or in the back if you want to attach it to classroom furniture. It doesn't have to be attached at all and it is easy to use with or without the clamp holding it. I can't wait for all my "sad pencils" to meet this gorgeous groovy guy. I bet there will be "happy pencils" in my room for months to come. Now I can even let the kids use it without having to do a pencil sharpening schedule and being the pencil police. (sigh of relief)

Of course we had to try it out to see if it really was going to live up to what it claimed to be. We watched the video to make sure we did it the right way. The pencil came out sharper then any point I have ever seen. The clear plastic tray for the shavings makes it easy to see when it needs to be emptied instead of having to guess when it is full. It is sturdy and well made and I know that we are going to enjoy having our new friend in first grade this year. Of course we will have to come up with a name for him like any other respectable first grade classroom would do right?  Hmmmmm, what to name him......

As you are doing your "back to school" shopping for your classroom on the internet stop by and purchase one of these because you will not be disappointed!!!  Why?  Here are five very good reasons why you won't be disappointed:

1. It is priced well and ships for free in the US
2. It is so quiet you will not have to be the pencil police
3. It can go next to where all of your pencils hang out
4. It can sharpen pencils and colored pencils
5. It has a cool retro look and is groovy green

Thank you Troy at Classroom Friendly Supplies for allowing us to review your FABULOUS groovy green pencil sharpener!!!

FREE "BOOM" Game with Addition Facts!

The "BOOM" game is a fun and fast paced game that can be done in small or large groups. I always cut out, laminate and put in a large coffee container that the students can get their hands into without seeing the cards. The container is passed around and if the student gets the addition fact correct it gets passed to the next person.  If the "BOOM" card is pulled out a turn is lost. This unit contains addition math facts for practicing addition.  The object of the game is to get as many cards as you can before the "BOOM" card comes out and you lose a turn. The container is passed around until all of the cards are gone. Then each student counts the number of cards they have and they count as points.  A Common Core State Standards poster is included for your convenience to post while using the game/center.

Elementary Matters: Totally Engaged Students

Sally, my Bloggy Friend over at Elementary Matters has excellent resources on Whole Brain Teaching.  I don't know why I haven't seen this before now?  This is the beauty of being in a blog community is that  you are the teacher and you are the learner as well.  We all know that we learn so much from our peers and that is one of the best parts about teaching.

Elementary Matters: Totally Engaged Students: Are you familiar with Whole Brain Teaching ?  I discovered it online last fall while I was exploring information on how the brain learns......
