"Check In" With Your Students

I love what this teacher does to effectively connect to her students at the start of the day!

Do You Symbaloo?

Access your bookmarks anywhere with Symbaloo because it is free in the US.  You can log in to your personal Symbaloo pages.  If you don't have any idea what Symbaloo is (which I didn't) go to youtube and watch some of the video demonstrations on it.  The Symbaloo website has videos as well to get you started.  It is very user friendly and it can easily be a homepage and you can have different "webmixes".  Webmixes are where you add links to one tab of nothing but say your news sources, your teacher blogs you follow, the stores you shop at and the opportunities are endless.

I use it in my classroom and one tab is math websites my kids are allowed to go to during Math Daily 5.  The other tab is for Literacy/Reading websites they are allowed to visit during Reading Daily 5.  Give it a try and see what you think and let me know what some of your ideas are for using it.  CLICK ON THE IMAGE ABOVE TO TAKE YOU TO THE SYMBALOO WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Dropbox

Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, music and videos anywhere. After you install Dropbox on your computer, any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, your iPhone and iPad and even the Dropbox website! With the Dropbox app, you can take everything that matters to you on the go.  I use Dropbox with my first grade team and we share resources this way and drop materials in it that we want to resource at home.  It is a good way to share photos with friends and family too having separate folders and permissions.  The more people you get to join Dropbox the more space you have given to you.  Take a look at it and I think you will like it just as much as my family and teachers do!  Click the image above and it will take you to the website to get more information.

Scrabble and Chickens???

OK, today I was teaching my wonderful First graders how to play scrabble and we got off to a pretty good start.  I left them alone for only a minute I promise and this is what happens when you do that.  You come back to a bunch of words all scrunched together and attached in places where they don't belong.  OK, so we got the word "zombie" on there and I'm not quite sure that is allowed in a first graders brain?

This evening I went to run errands and I was in Walgreens and I found these cute plastic chickens and my first thought was, "Hey, I know I can come up with something really cool for these little cuties".  Well, I have thought of ONE idea.  OK, so if YOU had these cute yellow chickens to put in a center what would you do with them???

You Were In First Grade?

Yes, I really was a first grader once many years ago.  My first graders wanted to know what I looked like when I was in first grade so I took this picture and put it in dropbox and headed off to school.  I also had to take in my trusted and faithful friend and "Huggy" so that they could see my raggedy old doggie named Hippie that I carried around when I was little.  They were fascinated with the fact that I had a "Huggy" and still had it.  So I think where this is leading is that they are each going to want to bring in their "Huggy" now to show me what they use to sleep with at night to make the world safer.

Bird Watching Hobby

What most people don't know about me is I am an avid bird watcher and I love to watch them right outside my window where my computer is.  My son was taking pictures and using the iPad with the iBird Pro App to call birds into the yard and this beautiful creature landed right on the tree next to my Koi pond and he snapped this picture.  It looks as if he landed right there just so Ben could take his picture.  The really cool thing is last summer we rescued a cedar waxwing baby that had flown into my bedroom window.  When he was alright enough to fly again we let him go.  Don't you wonder if life comes full circle in different ways?  This could have been the very little baby that we helped to rescue dropping back in to say "thank you".  Isn't that cool?  He received over TEN THOUSAND hits yesterday when it was entered.
